Even given all of the specific political sins he committed during his awful speech on the night Barack Obama clinched the Democratic nomination, what probably damaged him most in his presentation was his overall appearance. It wasn’t that he looked old, although certainly he did: it was that he looked befuddled.
And when you’re trying to convince the American people to elect a man who would become the oldest person ever to take office as president, befuddled isn’t exactly the look you’re going for.
This becomes all the more true, of course, if, at about the same time, the candidate in question has also been making one stupid misstatement after another regarding very important facts — the most famous, of course, being his bogus claim that troop levels in Iraq have returned to pre-surge levels.
Thus, as I prophesied back in March, long before the most recent collection of screw-ups:
As the originator (and so far only user) of the term Oldfartgate in regard to John McCain’s age, I feel compelled to note the likelihood that one day soon Oldfartgate will merge with the current McCain mania of Constantlyfuckingupgate creating the new sensation of Oldfartconstantlyfuckingupgate.
All joking aside, this is political dynamite — something that could singlehandedly sink McCain’s campaign. And I’ll guarantee you that the people running his campaign know it. The problem, of course, is that there may not be much they can do about it. As Sam Mussabini said to Harold Abrahams in the movie Chariots of Fire, “We have an old saying in my game, son, that you don’t put in what God’s left out.”
But if the McCain campaign is limited in its ability to control the age question, the same is equally true for the folks running the Obama campaign.
By way of analogy, when a lawyer is trying a case to a jury, sometimes the most effective way to make a point isn’t to state it specifically, but, instead, to leave it to the jury to figure it out themselves. That’s what we’re dealing with here. McCain’s age isn’t an issue the Obama campaign can directly push — that would backfire.
And that’s okay, because the issue is already out there anyway. And if last week was any indication, the jury, in the form of the electorate, isn’t going to have a lot of trouble figuring it out.

Speaking of constantlyfuckingupgate, The East Coast is suffering from 100 degree temps., the Midwest is having the worst flooding in modern times, and we over here just got a snow advisory of as much as a foot of snow in the mountain passes and this just a couple weeks after record high temps melted the snow pack and caused rivers to flood and that was just a week after we had snow here in the lowlands. The problem is that the general media is not calling him much on befuddlegate or anything else. One dailykos journal by BarbinMD points out that McCain lied to Newsweek about his comments that in New Orleans about what Hillary Clinton brought to the table in her run. About those remarks he told Newsweek that he did not say that.
Newsweek must have prepared for their interview by reviewing relevant video, but they seemed to have let McCain’s lie go unmentioned. Perhaps Newsweek should change their name to Propagandaweekly. Something that claims to be a “News” organization should be a little less befuddled. It is a little early to see if the media will join a love fest for John McCain, but I won’t hold my breath.

Everybody: sorry about my rough language above but I woke up in a bad mood and then read all the crummy news to make me feel even worse.
On the good side though, the 19 year old Mexican boy who has been living with us for the past 18 months just finished his 1st year of college with about a 2.9 GPA. Not bad for a kid who waded here at 12 years old with not much education and no English. I have to admit I pushed a bit too hard at times, playing the bad cop to my wife’s good cop, but he does smile a lot now.

Dear Alwayshope, Here in Indpls, the tornadoes came through last week, but didnt hit our side of town. So far the rainstorms havent caused White River to flood but farther south has been another matter. The poor folks in Columbus have had a mess. The thunderstorms have been wild and wooly. Luckily, we only had one large limb down. More storms are expected on Friday. There is an old guy down around Bloomington, who is building an ark. Maybe he is being smart.
As for McCain, he sounds raspy. I wonder if he will make it through the campaign? I said a long time ago, it was nuts for him to take on so much stress, having had malignant melanoma. The immune system does not tolerate stress well, especially in older people. It is bound to have an effect. Incidences of cancer are indicative of an immune system that can fail. McCain may have dodged the bullet in the past, but he is skating on thin ice now.
