Fiddling (in Iraq) as Afghanistan burns

The Times has an important (and long) story out today that proves something Iraq war critics have been saying for a long time: Bush’s ill-advised invasion of Iraq didn’t just create a horrible mess in Iraq: by stealing resources desperately needed to stabilize post-war Afghanistan, it created a huge one there too.

(NY Times) How a ‘Good War’ in Afghanistan Went Bad

President Bush’s critics have long contended that the Iraq war has diminished America’s effort in Afghanistan, which the administration has denied, but an examination of how the policy unfolded within the administration reveals a deep divide over how to proceed in Afghanistan and a series of decisions that at times seemed to relegate it to an afterthought as Iraq unraveled.

Statements from the White House, including from the president, in support of Afghanistan were resolute, but behind them was a halting, sometimes reluctant commitment to solving Afghanistan’s myriad problems, according to dozens of interviews in the United States, at NATO headquarters in Brussels and in Kabul, the Afghan capital.

At critical moments in the fight for Afghanistan, the Bush administration diverted scarce intelligence and reconstruction resources to Iraq, including elite C.I.A. teams and Special Forces units involved in the search for terrorists. As sophisticated Predator spy planes rolled off assembly lines in the United States, they were shipped to Iraq, undercutting the search for Taliban and terrorist leaders, according to senior military and intelligence officials.

I hate even thinking about the price our children will pay because of the mendacity and incompetence of this collection of would-be cowboys.

Or the Afghani & Iraqi children.

  2. Larkrise Says:

And, the bombs keep dropping on civilians. Bush blabbered on in a press conference that it was necessary to fight in Iraq so that no more young terrorists would be created to commit 9/11’s. First of all, most of the terrorists who took part in 9/11 were Saudis. We aren’t bombing Saudi Arabia. None were Iraqis. None were from Afghanistan. Al-Quaeda has been able to use the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as great recruitment tools for terrorists. There are more than ever before. Hatred against the U.S. increases with every civilian casualty. So, Bush must think: 1) I will kill as many Iraqis and civilians in Afghanistan as possible and that will reduce the number of terrorists; or) All citizens of those countries will be so intimidated by bombs that they will rush to embrace “Democracy” and thank us for destroying their countries. Both governments in Iraq and Afghanistan cannot control their citizens nor the guerilla warfare. Both governments are puppet governments; and the people know it. Thus, they go their own way. History has shown that a country cannot be conquered for long, if the population of that country does not support the invasion. Napoleon found that out. Hitler found that out. We should have learned that in Vietnam. Russia found it out in Afghanistan. Bush is an idiot. Pure, plain and simple. The Neo-cons are idiots, pure, plain and simple. There has been a bumper poppy crop in Afghanistan. The terrorists rejoice, because it will nicely fund their activities. Meanwhile, we are pouring 2 billion a month down a rat hole in Iraq, while Bush blabbers nonsense, and the economy is sinking fast.

thanks, Chuck, for not forgetting them

The Neo-cons are idiots, pure, plain and simple.

why? I wouldn’t be that harsh on them

Ok, i also think, that the War on Terra isn’t really a bright example for competence – but what if that simply doesn’t matter?

Don’t look at what they say, look at what it will do – what if the result we got is exactly the result, they worked for?

and what happened? The increase in terrorism increases violence – violence destructs – destruction requires work and resources to be fixed – work and resources cost money

and exactly that happened – Record Prices Mean Record Profits for Oil Companies – for YEARS now! Isn’t that great?!?!

just kill a few people, maim some children, destroy some cities around the oil springs – then the price of the reduced supply lets the money flow faster than oil

or look at all the reconstruction efforts! How much money has Halliburton “earned”! Every suicide attack is desired! First it shows the world that the “barbarians” are not able to “live in peace” and need to be ruled and controlled (==> America cannot leave) and second it created destruction – so the companies “working for reconstruction” are “forced” to “continue”

look at Katrina – there the “helping hand” didn’t exist, because destruction – not self made – doesn’t sell to the Neocons, the Party of the Winners – just rebuild an American city as it was? Why? Chaos is better for profits! And think of the possibilities destruction offers – New Orleans may soon be “white” again, isn’t that great?!?!

Regarding ongoing wars, never be won – don’t forget the “need” for “better weapons” – even nukes are socially acceptable again, the war industries are back in business! (Remember Eisenhower? “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.”)

all works fine for the “War Party” and rich companies, that’s the truth. The polls? Who cares, when you own the Universe…

So looking at the results, i guess, the Neocons were not idiots…

    actually, they were unbelievably successful…

then add to Steve’s post “Dying American style — early” – and remember the Romans – and that the Neocons admire the Romans and want to recreate Rome again – the empire based on mercenaries and slaves, based on panes et circenses and conquest and corruption, without any sympathy for losers – they even beat their sons systematically in school to make them bitter and cruel because that makes “good soldiers”…

and so i think, the Neocons are even more successful than we want to see

Larkrise, i fear, we are the idiots…

Again has the right of it.
