Needed: two political revolutions

Today’s congressional Democrats certainly make it hard to be a loyal Democrat.  They talk the talk of political toughness against Bush well enough certainly, but when it comes time to walk the walk they always find an excuse for caving.  And as bad as this is in general, it becomes downright disgusting when the subject at hand involves selling out our personal liberties.

The most recent Democratic civil liberties cop out, of course, was Congress voting to give Bush even broader eavesdropping authority — the perfect response, obviously, to the overwhelming evidence that his administration has been abusing the far reaching authority it already has.

As Glenn Greenwald aptly describes it, “Congressional Democrats . . . increasingly bear more and more responsibility for the assaults on our constitutional liberties and unparalleled abuses of government power — many (probably most) of which, it should always be emphasized, remain concealed rather than disclosed.”

It’s becoming increasingly clear that this nation needs not one, but two, political revolutions: the first to bury Bush style Republicans; the second to bury Bush enabling Democrats.

And we probably won’t get the first one without the second one.

    Please, no offense intended

but there is much truth in old sayings – maybe there is more to do than just some “revolutions”, just get rid off the current leadership?

a tougher job than just ask and demand?

you know: people have the govs…

again – no offense intended, it’s just the knowledge that bad leaders always come back. It is, as Terry Pratchett says: “People think that stories are shaped by the people. In fact, it’s the other way around… And every time fresh actors tread the path of the story, the groove runs deeper.”

If ye love wealth greater than Liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. – Samuel Adams

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I wish George Orwell hadn’t been so prescient. If he had named his book “2004″ instead of “1984″ he would have been right on the money; perpetual war with shifting enemies, torture, secret & constant surveillance. Did I leave something out? A docile people maybe?

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

“It would indeed be ironic if, in the name of national defence, we would sanction the subversion of one of those liberties which make the defence of our nation worthwhile.”

I saw this quote somewhere today and sent it to my representative who voted for this along with a few choice words of my own.

” This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs, when he first appears, he is a “protector”.
