I’m still here, though I don’t know why since we’ve been neglected so long.

Here’s a theoretical question: there has been a lot of talk lately about the slump in new housing construction, how is that bad? New housing means more environmental damage, so I don’t see how lack of that damage is a bad thing. And on a corollary note, more housing is caused by more people which I don’t see as a sustainable situation. What do you all think is the optimum human population ?

I’m still here and I feel bad for complaining, kinda snarkily ’bout Steve neglecting us. You’d think we could think of a topic to discus while the wise men are busy. WE have neglected the cafe actually and I want to buy Steve a beer. Sorry, man, I was blaming you for not inspiring me when I should realize that we can inspire each other. Chuck, for example is so damn entertaining and creative in his curmudgeonly way, Monday’s should be “Chuck’s totally off topic” day.
Late Tuesday, early wednesday really, should be “Larkrise gives the pusilanimous polecats some straight talk” day. We could have”richl and hizzhoner’s Thoughtful Thursday”. I’ll take Saturday, ” Hope you can make me laugh” day.
Then when Steve gets back and the wise men get going again on Wednesday nights, we can all just enjoy, drink up and remember that when the bartender is gone, we should be thankful that he left the bar open in hopes we might inspire each other and maybe him too.
Steve, do your thing. the episodes are worth waiting for and the company is always good even if we don’t stop to say hey and have a drink when we drive by.

I don’t know why you’re here either, Chuck. Steve has treated us dreadfully.

A slump is bad for the economy, the contractors, the tax base, but it’s good for the Earth to take a little respite from all building all the time. There is currently so much vacant housing from foreclosures that it’s really not the time to start new projects.

My idea of optimum human population might be very different than yours. I like a lot of room in between houses and people. I don’t think I could ever live in China w/all her billions. I’ve seen pics of the beaches there, and that would be my scary place of way too many souls in way too small a land area, but then again I feel that way in Manhattan.

I live in the middle of nowhere with more corn and beans and pigs around me than neighbors, the optimum human population (if you like room to breathe) is right here in Indiana because, apparently, not many people want to live here. I like the quiet, the night sky and the friendliness of neighbors who don’t live too close to each other. I suppose, in the long run, Mother Earth will decide the optimum human population. And of course, people killing each other for resources will move the pieces around the chess board but eventually, we’ll be forced to take responsibility for maintaining a planet by sharing those resources and limiting our own footprints. If the present climate of greed and denial doesn’t change, it will a long, hard slog.
