I have long said I want to see no one in court unless they are sitting alongside George and Dick.
I was also flat out against Lt. Calley’s trial on the same grounds. All that type of trial is, is a pablum to settle the tummy’s of ignorant loudmouths.
P.S. Cally was given a life sentence. During his house arrest after his life sentence was reduced to 20 years. Shortly thereafter he was given a presidential pardon. And Capt. Thompson, where was he during the trial? Well, quietly shunted off the the side with a Soldiers Medal and an admonitory ‘Shhh they might hear.’ is where he was, along with Spec. 4 Colburn. Unfortunately Spec. 4 Andreotta bought the farm shortly after his heroisim at Mei Lei.

Colin Powell had some kind of role in the Mei Lai cover-up, didnt he? I have heard that was one of the reasons he didnt run for President. Mei Lai was racism at its finest and so was the aftermath.
As for the torture investigation, Holder is going to pull every stunt in the book to keep from spotlighting Cheney and Bush’s role in it. This is disgusting and immoral. Obama seems unable to see how it slimes him, as well. If you ignore evil, you enable it, and become tarnished by it. This is one of my greatest disappointments in Obama. It takes the bloom off the rose. More and more, I see just another politician. It is difficult to watch hopes and dreams die in the muck of politics.

Racism had nothing to do with it. It was blindly following orders combined with burn out. Orders to wipe out Mai Lei came from at least brigade level. Calley was simply “Following orders.” In other words he was tired of the country, war, heat, bugs, never being able to relax, never knowing which villager might kill you (yes 5 and 6 year olds were taught how to pull the pin a grenade secured under their cloths and what kid wouldn’t distrust dear old uncle ?) . In other other words he simply snapped. (why else do you think it took three commands from a guy sitting behind a machine gun before he would stop?)
Any way I could go on and on explaining, not justifying what happened there but the point is , whatever else Mai Lei was it was not a racist thing it was a total burn out “fuck the world thing”. Same as happens today in Iraq and Afghanistan.
To answer your first question I don’t know but I don’t recall ever hearing anything about him.

richl, you are welcome to your opinion. I do not agree with it. Of course, there are many contributing factors to why Mei Lai happened. War IS Hell! However, I have cared for Vietnam Vets during my years in mental health nursing. Some of them expressed hatred for “Gooks” both from the North and South. Some regretted their feelings of racial dislike of Vietnamese. I believe now and believed then that racism was a factor in our intervention in Vietnam and in the Mei Lai tragedy. When other races and cultures are called demeaning names like “Gooks”, “Niggers”, “Micks”,Chinks”, “Spics”, “Wops”, “Kikes”, Ragheads and many other degrading terms, racism is behind it. It is an attempt to insult and dehumanize others. Calley may have snapped; but the roots of his contempt had been growing a long time. Our culture has an underlying arrogance and prejudice that continues to need cleansing. Since WWII, we have attacked small, Third World countries with a vengeance. The reasons may differ, but there is an attitude of:”We are the Big Cheese. You are small, defective potatoes. We will overpower you and force our political philosophy on you, because you are too ignorant to know what is best.” I, for one, am weary of that attitude. We will have to agree to disagree, richl.
