Clearly, the Democratic members of Congress who have joined the obstructionist GOP on this issue, or who have abandoned the core values of the progressive community that they claim to represent, are responding to some form of pressure. We should not pretend that members of the Democratic Party are any more immune to the desires of the corporate interests who helped them to get into office than are members of the GOP. The ‘Blue Dog’ Democrats are serving what they see as their real constituency, which doesn’t happen to be the progressives who they claim to represent. We progressives have a nasty blind spot. But we ignore how our own party has been tainted by money at our own peril. A small number of senior members of congress control what can and cannot be accomplished. They became senior members of the party by playing the games that keep them in office. Those games come with a price, and we’re seeing the results in their betrayal.

We dont need to worry nearly as much about the Swine Flu epidemic as we do about the epidemic of Stupidity that has once more taken over the nation. Of course, there arent going to be Death Panels! Anyone who believes that needs to be on the list for a brain transplant. Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow have been exposing the roots of this idiotic rumor for the past 2 weeks. The problem is that the people who believe it, watch Fox News and listen to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin. Naturally, the Rethuglican’ts, ever the opportunists, have jumped on it with gusto and glee. I have an acquaintance, who stated with certainty, that Obama was going to throw all the elderly off of Medicare! She is wealthy, but rather a selfish, shallow woman, and listens religiously to the Far-Right Lie Machine. In exasperation, I said: “Yes, and Elvis lives and Crop Circles are made by little green men from Mars.” I have lost patience with these folks.I have lost patience with Harry Reid, with Mad Dog Democrats, and with bipartisan BS! It should be obvious to all but the comatose, that the current crop of Rethuglican’ts are NOT going to vote for any bill that comes out of the Obama Administration, and actually looks like the least bit of reform. It will not happen. Their strategy is to bully, block, and bluster. They will use hatemongering, fearmongering, and backstabbing (Grassley!!!!!) to defeat Obama; and keep the insurance companies feeding at the trough and giving out those campaign donations. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this out. In fact, not only is it unwise to give into bullies because you enable them, it is poor politics, the politics of weakness. You cannot build consensus with folks that wont even come to the table. In the meantime, the uninsured continue to suffer; and healthcare costs continue to rise. Either the Democrats want to foster REAL change, or appear weak fools for having tried and failed.
